Discover Japanese Hotel Designs at STYLE Bangkok October 2019

Japan is a dream destination attracting tourists from across the globe. With complete hospitality services ranging from hotels, hostels and guesthouses. Japan welcome tourists in all forms. Besides, Japanese offers its one of a kind 'Ryokan', a Japanese-style hotel and capsule hotel, making accommodation designs in Japan one of the fastest growing sectors.

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce, joined forces with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), organized the Hotel Beyond 2020 – Japanese Hotel Market from Perspective of Design Trends seminar at STYLE Bangkok October 2019. The Fair, organized by DITP ran from 17-21 October 2019. The seminar welcomed many enthusiastic attendees to discover design trends in the Japanese hotel business markets from market experts Mr. Shinichi MITSUKI, General Manager of Designer Management Department and Mr. Takaya SHIRATORI, Team Manager, Planning Marketing Section Team 1, Solutions Promotion Department of MITSUI Designtec Co., Ltd., a subsidiary company of leading Japanese developer Mitsui Fudosan.

Mr. SHIRATORI said the Japanese hotel markets follow global hotel market trends. It would seem that the numbers of Japanese travelers are declining within their own country while numbers of tourists coming to Asia and Japan have significantly increased.

It is expected that the Asia-Pacific region where Thailand and Japan are situated saw a significant growth in tourism. In 2018, Japan welcomed more than 31 million travelers from around the world and the numbers keep rising. One of the reasons for making Japan a dream destination is that it offers a variety of accommodation choices ranging from luxurious five-star hotels, functional hotels like city hotels or business hotels, Ryokan style, to capsule hotels. All of these hotel options have been freshly renovated to accommodate attendees of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Mr. MITSUKI revealed that Japanese hotel design trends have been evolving. In the 80s period, most of the hotel designs were classic and luxurious interiors with high ceilings and full facilities such as spa and gym.

Hotel trends since then have shifted in the 90s where designs were left up to designers. For instance, one of the most notable hotels in that period was the Morgans Hotel in New York which designed by an American designer.

In the year of 2000, styles and designs of hotel had more emphasis on lifestyle. Hence, the Bulgari Hotel & Resort in Milan, Italy, or Hoshinoya Hotel in Karuizawa, Japan. These hotels provided popular activities for hotel guests. After those trends, there were some new trends that had arisen such as the sustainability trend.

Until the recent years, hotel designers started to use the crossover concept where hotel are no longer just an accommodation space but designed to offer so much more. By adding gimmicks like robots to replace the real staff, or designing a stylish social media-worthy elevator, could make a hotel stand out above from the rest. Some hotels offered a museum vibe, some offered a walk-through connecting space making guests feel homey, some had the design of a coffee shop.

Designing the mixed function space for hotels could offer a new experience for a guest. The coexisting area and the open layout, would help fully utilizing the use of space where guest has fun and an eye-opening experience. Plus, it would add the charm and uniqueness to a compact or narrow area. To reduce the problem of room service profits and the cost of maintenance, we would see some of the hotels offer food or drink corners providing guest a much more convenient stay, i.e. the Hilton New York has been serving their food at the Heb’n Kitchen since 2013.
